Engagement Photography

Everyone in the wedding photos seems so comfortable and relaxed that you might think the photographer is a longtime friend or family member. In reality, he is a hired professional, but he does have an advantage: the engagement session. Seasoned Louisville wedding photographer David Blair believes having an engagement session makes a momentous difference in capturing people being themselves on their wedding day. He calls it an engagement session, but it is actually a kind of pre-wedding portrait session. It is a significant part of his work, and he includes it with every wedding package he offers. He strongly encourages each couple to take advantage of the session because, not only does it provide more romantic images of the couple for enlargements, a photo guest book, or a slide show, but it also benefits David tremendously. He tells all of his clients that it is for him, as much as it is for them, because he gets to see how they interact with each other and with the camera. He gets to know them and what to expect from them on the wedding day.

The engagement session functions as a very low-key, warm-up to the wedding. David wants to make it fun and casual, so he tells them to wear something they look good in, but can also be comfortable in. The couple picks a location like walking in a Lexington's Triangle Park or hanging out on Louisville's riverfront. The setting and the scenario is completely up to the couple which enables every shoot to be different and for each set of clients to get something unique. David does many Indiana engagement sessions with it just across the river and even travels to do Tennessee and Ohio engagement sessions. No matter where a couple decides to have their engagement session, the benefit is always confidence in the photographer. They see how David works and they relax with him. They realize that he is the kind of guy they can be comfortable with. Before he starts shooting, he tells them that he is going to put them in this good light or by this attractive architecture and just leaves them alone to do whatever they want. He asks them to simply try not to have their backs toward him. He suggests that they walk, talk, hold hands, kiss and just be themselves. He encourages them to show affection because it always looks good and it helps them relax.

For the majority of the session David backs up and with a long lens captures them as they really are. He does set up some images, but is sure to keep posing minimal. David understands that a couple in love does not need to be told to smile but just needs to relax. By the end of the four to six hour engagement session, the couple knows David's style and his personality, and they know what to expect from him on the day of the wedding. For their Engagement Session Steven and Samantha wanted to take some photos in Papa John’s Cardinal Football Stadium. Samantha had been on the dance team at U of L and they are planing to have a whole U of L room. These are sure to make the wall. They also wanted some photos with both colorful Fall leaves and some more urban looking ones with a bridge or the city behind them. This was one of those sessions that reminded David how much he loves being a Louisville engagement photographer as well as a Louisville wedding photographer.
